Coronavirus Disrupts Tea Picking

Tea production in Kisii County has declined sharply following economic effects of coronavirus, authorities in the sector have disclosed.

Speaking at Nyamache Tea Factory, Acting Regional Manager William Bii explained that tea production had reduced because farmers were no longer plucking the green leaf.

This comes as farmers countrywide continued to give their views to Agriculture Cabinet Secretary, Peter Munya’s draft proposals on reforms in the sub sector.

The draft has since drawn varied reactions from the farmers and players in the industry. During the occasion, Ethical Tea Partnership donated 4,000 facemasks to tea the Nyamache Tea Factory farmers.

The Ethical Tea Partnership is a not-for-profit membership organisation that has been working with tea producers and tea companies to improve the sustainability of the tea industry since 1997.

The factory’s board of directors’ chairman Joseph Nyagaka, thanked the partner for the donation saying the masks were highly in demand. He appealed to other partners to bridge the deficit. Check bad credit payday advance.

Nyagaka urged chairmen of tea buying centers who will distribute the masks to insist on their responsible use to avert contraction of coronavirus
