Rice Farmers Cry For Market

Lack of market and storage facilities is hampering rice production in Usonga location, Siaya County.

Usonga rice farmers said they are currently stranded with over 3,000 bags of rice that they harvested recently.

Led by Ms Evelyn Tabu Akumu, the farmers lamented that the County Government had promised them a storage facility but it is yet to fulfill the promise.

Akumu said that the farmers who heeded calls to expand production as there was a ready market were now watching their produce waste away after a bumper harvest.

Speaking to the press at Siriwo village in Sumba sub location, Akumu said previously, they sold their produce to customers from the neighbouring Uganda but the clients vanished following the outbreak of Coronavirus.

She urged the County government to fulfil its promise of constructing a storage facility for rice farmers to enable them cut down on post-harvest losses.
